darin_pianoHave you ever been curious about writing code? Have you ever wanted to learn to make your own music? In this lesson, you’ll find out how you can do both at the same time.

We’ll look at Sonic Pi, a free, open-source application that uses a beginner-friendly coding language to create almost any kind of music you can imagine. Sonic Pi is currently being used in schools worldwide to introduce kids to the basics of writing code, but it’s also a powerful musical instrument suitable for studio work or even live performance.

If you’ve never written a line of code in your life, this class will give you the basics to get started. And if you’re an experienced coder, you’ll find out how you can take the skills you already have in an entirely new, creative direction.

Sonic Pi is completely free, and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux at http://sonic-pi.net/. Feel free to install it on your system, and bring your laptop (and headphones!) to class – you’ll be able to try out the examples as we talk about them.
