Nearly half of the solid waste produced globally is organic or biodegradable. Much of it ends up in landfills where it produces the greenhouse gas methane, which is up to 34 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a century! But processed correctly, we can create valuable fertilizer, sequester carbon, and produce usable biogas.
Since Sonoma Compost shut down in 2015, our compost has been shipped out of the county. But now there is a new compost facility being planned for Sonoma County!
The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency unanimously recommended that Renewable Sonoma be selected as the future municipal organics processing and composting company. Their plan is to build a state of the art composting facility that includes the generation of renewable energy!

Leslie Lukacs is a pioneer in zero waste with 21 years of experience influencing waste reduction and reuse in California. She specializes in the design and implementation of comprehensive sustainability programs for large venues, and events throughout the nation.
Roy Alper has 30 years of experience in the development, regulation and financing of alternative energy systems. He is an attorney with extensive experience in negotiating agreements for renewable and waste-fueled projects, including feedstock supply and fuel amendment agreements, offtake agreements, wastewater discharge and solids disposal agreements, obtaining environmental and land use approvals and in leading project development from conception to operation.
